Such a simple thing is driving my students nuts! We are needing a simple to make 'magnet' pole detector circuit that my Jr High / Middle School students can make in my beginning Electronics class. Preferably with the use of a couple LED colored lights to detect North and South. Don't need to know 'how strong' of a magnet, just North or South.....

Any suggestions or posts would greatly be appreciated. - Thanks in advance. This will definitely make some projects work better.

Hi,
these days most of the people are using smartphones and there are few free applications just for that. I am using it myself on my iphone.
https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/magnet-utility/id383106132?mt=8
and for Android phones https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nu.fdp.pole_finder

I hope that helps.

It wouldn't be very hard to construct something like that using a hall effect transistor.

Thank you for the tip about APP's that may be used with cell phones, but all electronic devices are forbidden here at school at this level...

Thank you for the post and place to look for making a North/South magnetic indicator.  It will be something that we will  try putting together, as soon as we get the parts.

I appreciate your help.

Hope your day has gone well for you and tomorrow goes even better.
