Title: Earth's magnetic field
Post by: Hitman on January 05, 2016, 04:55:55 PM
I would have thought this was fake till I replicated it !!

Hi Hitman,
is not fake at all but it is nothing special in it. If you will use something else instead of a twisted thread then you will have no rotation at all.

Romero

hi romero,
I thought the same as you did till I did the experiment, its not the thread, I made sure it was not twisted.
Just do the experiment and you will see its not fake, it only takes 2 magnets and string to try it.

As I can see you have two threads, try using only one all the way. Next to the magnets I can see where it splits...

Actually there is only 1 thread, the other one is only a loop at the end to hold on to the magnets. Just take 5 minutes to do the experiment and you will see for your self.

I cannot access the video, you made it private. I have done the experiment and in my case does not rotate.
I will try different types of magnets tomorrow but I still don't see any reason for this to work.

Some people have already replicated this effect including woopyjump(Laurent) on youtube, there are suggestions that its because i'm in canada that I get a ccw spin and I think tinman who is in austrailia is getting a cw rotation.

I first used 2 speaker magnets but I've also tried neo and even stacked them with the same results.

heres another link to the second video:

@Hitman

It does not work for me in any configuration, maybe does not work in UK but I still don't see any reason why this should work. Earth poles are fixed, not shifting and the compass does not rotate.

Maybe someone should make a large compass using two speaker magnets, one for each side or pole, balanced properly on a needle. If that rotates then we have something to think about.

@ Romero
Well looks like you were right, nothing special here :)

There is something defined by Newton first law:  Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.
Watch an example here, somehow related to this experiment.
